The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
